The Sacred Mountain
Phnom Kulen is a sacred highland plateau approximately 50 kilometres north of Siem Reap — the site where King Jayavarman II declared the independence of the Khmer Empire in 802 AD. The mountain combines historical significance, a waterfall with a swimming pool, the River of a Thousand Lingas (a riverbed carved with thousands of Hindu lingas and images of Vishnu, submerged under flowing water), and a massive reclining Buddha carved from natural rock.
